In a fight against the negative effects of mass tourism, the city of Venice bans tour groups of more than 25 people with tour guides. This was decided at the most recent meeting of the City Council and announced today. The move affects the city center and the islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello. Loudspeakers will be banned on future city tours.
These measures will be effective from June 1, 2024. It aims to promote sustainable tourism and ensure the safety and security of the city, said Elisabetta Bess, city councilor for security. In addition, “a signal is being sent against unauthorized tour guides,” said Sebastiano Costalonga, the city councilor in charge of trade.
Meanwhile, Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro signed a decree protecting public safety on New Year's Eve. From December 31 to January 1, 2024, till 6:00 a.m., shops, bars and outdoor stands are not allowed to sell or serve beverages in glass bottles, sealed cans and plastic bottles. Drinking of any kind is prohibited on the street.
