NHS trusts to cut carbon emissions
Ten NHS trusts across England, Wales and Scotland are set to cut
their annual carbon foot-print by 15% — or 40,000 tonnes of carbon
dioxide emissions* — by joining phase one of the
Government-funded Carbon Trust’s new NHS Carbon Management programme,
launched in October.
The trusts, which include Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation
Trust; Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Foundation Trust; St George’s
Healthcare NHS Trust and Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust, each look set
to save £7 million a year under the scheme.
Steve Morris, Finance Director at the Hammer-smith Hospitals NHS
Trust, said: "Keeping an eye on energy spend is critical in an
organisation the size of ours, particularly at a time when energy prices
are in constant flux. Ongoing good energy management is a vital part of
improving the efficiency of our organisation, for the benefit of
patients and staff."
The current NHS Carbon Management programme will run until the end of
March 2007. Any NHS Trust in the UK that would like to be considered for
inclusion in phase two of the programme should contact Tom Cumberlege,
NHS Programme Manager at the Trust, at tom. cumberlege@carbontrust.
