Search engine for GPs
More than 7,500 GPs — nearly one in five of the profession — have
already tried SearchMedica, a new Internet search engine designed
specifically for them.
The search engine, which cuts out irrelevant non-medical results by
searching sites hand-picked by GPs, was launched by Pulse publishers
CMPMedica in October.
Research shows that 97% of GPs use the Internet daily to find medical
information. Almost half, however, are disappointed with the relevance
of information returned by generic search engines, according to the
study by IMS*.
By giving users the option to search only relevant healthcare sites,
and by dividing results into categories such as evidence, patient
support, guidance and regulation, SearchMedica will help GPs find
accurate and up-to-date information quickly.
“The Internet has already made a dramatic difference to the way
doctors source information for themselves and their patients, but our
contact with GPs over recent years has alerted us to the need for a
dedicated search engine to help them get the information they want
quickly and easily”, says Lindsay Cook, Managing Director of CMP’s
Specialist Markets Division.
The new tool will complement the RCGP GP Guidance Database, whose
databases include sources of advice and practical guidance relating to
day-to-day administration, management and quality service provision in
general practice.
