Bluespier saves SWLEOC time and money
Rather than wait for National Programme for IT systems to come to
fruition, the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC)
chose to introduce an independent clinical-information system that has
helped propel the South West London SHA to the top of the national
league table.
Since the introduction of Bluespier Patient Manager in April 2004,
SWLEOC has seen a dramatic improvement in efficiency and saved over £1m
in the cost of orthopaedic implants alone.
Using Bluespier to capture and share clinical data from surgery and
for scheduling, SWLEOC, which handles 90–95 per cent of all orthopaedic
operations in south west London, has been able to increase its theatre
use from 50 to 90 per cent. Furthermore, by analysing the use of
different orthopaedic implants, the software has enabled the Epsom-based
SWLEOC to negotiate better pricing with implant manufacturers, resulting
in the saving detailed above.
Using the new system has increased efficiency and saved SWLEOC time
by capturing and sharing clinical data electronically, without the need
for additional input — eliminating repetitive form-filling and
consequently reducing the number of errors made. Increased transparency
across the hospital has also encouraged staff to fill schedules and
avoid cancellations.
“Due to the tremendous success of using the system in theatres and
scheduling, we are now rolling it out across every area of the hospital,
from pre-assessment, physio and discharge to wards and pharmacy”, says
Martin Bleazard, SWLEOC’s Business Manager. “It will undoubtedly
continue to be instrumental in our bid to improve efficiency, save time
and money and ultimately raise the quality of patient care.”
