Digital pen that recognises handwriting
The Swiss company Logitech has unveiled a new version of its existing
digital pen. The pen, which converts handwriting into digital text in
seconds, has improved handwriting recognition over the previous model
and offers a new written shortcut that efficiently transforms notes into
a Microsoft Word document.
The pen — the Logitech io2 — improves efficiency by allowing users to
send portions of their handwritten notes directly into the email or
other applications on their systems by using written shortcuts. When the
pen is docked, selected notes appear instantly both as handwritten notes
and automatically converted text within a split-screen interface. Users
can click a single button to have the text instantly inserted into a new
Word document, or they can first edit it as they compare it onscreen
with the handwritten notes.
The pen software encourages users to correct its interpretations of
their writing and to add words to its dictionary. During setup, it
searches for names of users’ contacts to ensure it gets these right, and
thereafter it frequently checks custom dictionaries in order to add
user-defined terms, acronyms/abbreviations and other special terminology
to its own dictionary.
“Our digital pen technology continues to get better, with each of the
improvements designed to help professionals increase their efficiency”,
said James Stanford, General Manager for the Digital Writing Group at
Logitech. “Often people sit in meetings and take several pages of notes
and then either spend valuable time transcribing those notes, or simply
put them aside. With the io2 digital pen, each line of notes can be
automatically sent to a new email, task, meeting or Word document,
maximising the usefulness of the notes while minimising the time it
takes to convert them.”
