Trial of online patient access to medical records begins
EMIS has begun a trial of a revolutionary new health tool that gives
patients online access to their own medical records.
Patients at a GP practice in Derbyshire can now view their medical
records on their doctor’s website or the Patient UK website
www.patient.co.uk They can also
book appointments and request repeat prescriptions. The innovation,
another step forward in involving patients more in their healthcare, was
one of a range of ehealth services demonstrated by the healthcare
systems provider at the Healthcare Computing (HC2006) conference last
month.
Using a secure log-on system, patients can view their medical records
quickly and easily in the privacy of their own homes; find clear
explanations of their condition and treatment; get more information via
links from diagnoses in the record and; print off information to read
before going to the surgery.
The system is also being made available to patients at GP surgeries
across the country, via the patient access to electronic records system
(PAERS) kiosk, which uses fingerprint recognition technology for secure
access. After a successful trial in four GP surgeries in London the
kiosk — the result of a partnership between EMIS and three GPs — is now
available to more than half of GP practices in the UK.
EMIS is the UK’s leading supplier of IT systems to primary healthcare
and is headquartered in Leeds.
