PCT reports improved incident reporting with Sentinel
Sedgefield PCT has reported a significant rise in the number of
patient incidents logged by staff since the introduction of Sentinel, a
reporting tool that enables mishaps to be recorded via NHSnet.
Implementation of the reporting system, from Yorkshire software
developer Vantage Technologies, has enabled Sedgefield to meet mandatory
reporting requirements and provide more effective risk-management,
through a series of early warning mechanisms. It is also helping to
promote a safety culture at the PCT, ensuring lessons are learnt from
patient safety incidents.
Sentinel has enabled Sedgefield staff to record and manage incidents
more effectively and conveniently via the Web. The data it provides also
helps identify incident themes and trends and, as a by-product, is
helping to improve the quality of patient care.
The Trust’s decision to use a web-based system has also enabled it to
comply with guidelines and recommendations from the National Patient
Safety Agency (NPSA) and requirements of the National Health Service
Litigation Authority (NHSLA) risk-management standard for PCTs.
The system, designed specifically for clinicians, has been rolled out
to 11 GP practices across the PCT.
