PDA security system gets MoD go-ahead
Berkshire-based security software specialist BeCrypt has received the
stamp of approval for its PDA security solution from the Ministry of
Defence (MoD).
The MoD’s Defence INFOSEC Product Co-Operation Group (DIPCOG) has
certified BeCrypt PDA Protect Baseline, a move that follows
certification last year by the Government’s technical authority for
information assurance within GCHQ, the Communications Electronic
Security Group (CESG). This authorised the product for use in government
to protect restricted material.
BeCrypt PDA Protect is a security solution for personal digital
assistants (PDAs) which can be installed and configured on either a
standalone device or on multiple devices.
The system provides a management console that allows administrators
to build a custom security policy, including encrypting removable memory
cards, setting password policies, setting synchronisation policies,
disabling permanent (flash) memory, and disabling the use of high-risk
features, such as connection to other devices.
PDA Protect can also be configured to audit connection and data
transfer events.
According to Peter Jaco, BeCrypt CEO (pictured): “PDAs are increasingly
being used across the UK government and military sectors to store
sensitive information and carry it into less secure environments. DIPCOG
approval for our PDA Protect Baseline provides Ministry of Defence users
with a certified security product that encrypts all data on the PDA and
helps mobile users to protect national data interests.”
