New medical records system goes live
Patients in North Cumbria are among the first in the country to
benefit from a new system for storing and retrieving their personal
records. The system, developed under the National Programme for IT (NPfIT),
has been installed by the three North Cumbrian PCTs and is now used by
community health staff including district nurses and physiotherapists.
Over the next two years it will be adopted by all NHS organisations in
the county and linked to the national spine.
The new system features several improvements on current practice: all
of a patient’s information is now stored in one place; clinicians in
different locations can view a patient’s record simultaneously and in
real time; there is less duplication and paperwork — patients no longer
have to repeat their details wherever they receive treatment; staff no
longer have to spend time sourcing records; and the new system has been
designed specifically with security considerations in mind,
theoretically enhancing security.
Ian Johnson, Account Executive from the CSC Alliance, local suppliers
of the new system, is very pleased with the way the project has gone.
“The successful go-live of this system has been the result of a strong
working partnership between the NHS implementation team and the CSC
Alliance team”, he said. “The project was delivered on schedule with NHS
staff able to benefit immediately from the new technology. It marks a
major milestone for the implementation of the National Programme for IT
in the Cumbria area.”
