Oxford hospitals opt for Olympus OsYris blood tracking solution
Middlesex-based Olympus OsYris has announced the successful piloting
of its BloodTrack transfusion system at the John Radcliffe Hospital in
Oxford.
On the back of the trial, Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals (ORH) Trusts are
now implementing BloodTrak Courier in all four of its facilities — the
Radcliffe Infirmary, the John Radcliffe Hospital, the Churchill Hospital
and the Horton Hospital.
BloodTrak is a modular system comprised of BloodTrak Courier and
BloodTrak SafeTx. The former manages blood stock by controlling access
to fridges where blood is kept, and tracking the movement of blood
products around the hospital environment, making sure the right blood
goes to the right patient.
BloodTrak SafeTx monitors blood units, making sure the right number
of units goes to the right patient. It uses a 2D barcode system,
combined with a handheld computer, to positively identify both the
relevant patient and blood unit. It also provides a complete electronic
audit trail for compliance with the EU Directive on blood safety.
In the first instance, the Trust has purchased BloodTrak Courier for all
sites, with a view to introducing BloodTrak SafeTx at a later date.
The Professor of Blood Transfusion Medicine at ORH, Mike Murphy, says:
“Using BloodTrak is safer, less time consuming and we know that staff
prefer it.”
