| In a deal with The
Phoenix Partnership, South West Dorset PCT will be the first to link local
prisons with a centralised clinical system. SystmOne Prison software will
be used to ease the burden of high-volume prisoner reception, transfer and
release at Dorset’s Verne, Weare, Dorchester and Guy’s Marsh prisons and
Portland Young Offenders Institution and Shepton Mallet prison in
Somerset. The six prisons house approximately 2000 inmates. The software
is built on the architecture of SystmOne GP and includes all of its key
functionality as well as prison-specific features. Special security
features enable certain aspects of patient records to be shared with other
healthcare professionals, with the prisoner’s consent, and because of the
nature of prisoner records it uses biometric security for practitioner
logon and for the signing of prescriptions.
Michael Jones, software developer at TPP, said, “SystmOne Prison will
allow prison healthcare staff to provide a better standard of care by
having greater access to patient information and more time with their
patients by reducing administration.”
Prisoners access healthcare far more often than other members of
society. A high proportion of prisoners come from socially excluded
sections of the community; 90% have mental health or substance abuse
problems; and morbidity rates for all diseases and conditions are higher
than normal.
