Southern Scientific has produced a new radiation-detection system that
uses GPS technology to obtain precise information.
The RadSurvey is fully weatherproof and consists of a sodium iodide
gamma-ray scintillation detector mounted with a pocket computer and an
automatic beacon-corrected GPS receiver with sub-metre accuracy.
It has a long battery life and a built-in multichannel analyser that
can be used in the field or the spectra saved and recalled later. During
operation, the positional information is displayed onscreen and also
stored on a memory card. The data can then be transferred to GIS mapping
software to produce contour maps, or classify areas according to user
requirements.
