Misys Healthcare Systems has released Laboratory Collection Manager, a
clinical lab software application using handheld technology devices to
automate specimen labelling at the bedside. ThedaCare, a three-hospital
community health organisation in Wisconsin, has been testing the product
within its daily lab workflow. Collection Manager is used by the
phlebotomy team via a wireless-compatible PDA device with a built-in
barcode scanner connected to a portable printer. The user identifies
patients by scanning their wristbands, then collects and labels the
specimens. The application is also used for other lab-specific tasks
such as uploading data to print specimen-collection lists per floor, or
per room. It features a password-protected security feature that
documents the hospital employee collecting the specimen and time-stamps
when the collection occurs.
