NHS Coventry and NHS Warwickshire migrate to single child health
system
28 July 2010
Primary Care Trusts NHS Coventry and NHS Warwickshire have gone
live with the CarePlus Child Health system from McKesson.
The new system replaces three disparate systems across the region,
reducing the administrative burden, creating cost efficiencies and
delivering a single vision of child health that will facilitate patient
care and service redesign.
The roll out of CarePlus Child Health, including the migration of
390,000 registration records onto one database, was completed on budget
and on time with no interruptions to service.
Robin Turton, Senior Project Manager at NHS Warwickshire, said, “In
order to support Child Protection and Child Health initiatives we had
acknowledged a need to work more closely across the two organisations.
When it came to replacing our legacy systems, we decided to stay with
McKesson because they have always delivered an excellent service. Their
system is proven in so many other areas across the UK, where it is
meeting the requirements of the NHS and working efficiently.”
The system is in use by four child health administration teams across
Coventry and Warwickshire, involving approximately 50 staff, and
information is available to clinicians to assist in patient care across
a number of key sites. As part of the migration to the single database,
which is hosted by McKesson, McKesson has transferred the organisations
onto national coding sets, bringing their coding in line with current
NHS standards.
Turton explains the benefits of creating a single way of working
across the two organisations, “We wanted to maintain the functionality
of our previous systems, whilst taking advantage of the opportunity to
standardise our processes and work a lot more quickly and efficiently
across the region. Besides the obvious benefits to patient care, the
single electronic view of child health has enabled us to access
information a lot more quickly, improving communication between the
administrative and clinical teams and supporting the grounds for service
redesign.”
Justine Richards, Director of Business Performance at Coventry
Community Health Services, speaks on behalf of users across the Trusts,
“CarePlus Child Health is already making a visible difference to both
resource utilisation and the continued emphasis on accurate patient
data. The improved functionality that we have with the system ensures
that resources are targeted at the areas where they can be most
effective.”
CarePlus Child Health is a web-based information system that provides
a full tool-kit of facilities to control the Child Health programme
either within a single trust, or over a number of trusts or strategic
health authorities.
It is a modular solution with each component supporting a different
aspect of the Child Health service. The core modules are Registration,
which controls the entry of children into the system, and the
Immunisation module; which ensures that children are invited for their
correct immunisations at the right time. Coventry and Warwickshire will
also be using the additional functionality available to track children
through their pre-school and school health careers.
Adrian Wookey, VP Service Delivery, McKesson UK says, “We are
extremely delighted and excited at this opportunity of retaining two of
our long-term customers. Having Coventry and Warwickshire PCTs choose to
remain with McKesson and migrate from one of our legacy systems to our
strategic Child Health solution, is testament that demand continues for
our reliable and proven services.”
