Speaking text messages for the visually impaired
30 April 2008
Esendex has brought an extra dimension to texting with its Voice SMS
service that enables customers to send SMS messages in voice format
directly to mobile phones and fixed lines world-wide.
Voice SMS is ideally suited to those who can’t easily read a
traditional text message, such the elderly, visually impaired and people
on the go.
Voice SMS converts text messages, sent using Esendex’s system, into a
voice call that is forwarded on to the recipient’s phone. The Esendex
Voice SMS service will make repeated attempts to deliver the message and
will prompt the recipient to acknowledge that the message has been
received, providing an important audit trail with proof of delivery.
Messages are sent via Esendex’s highly resilient network which,
combined with the service’s ‘acknowledge and audit’ functionality,
represents a flexible and reliable communications tool. Likely
applications for Voice SMS include contacting visually impaired
customers or those with reading difficulties with appointment reminders
or getting a message across in emergency situations.
"Voice SMS represents a key development in the use of text messaging
as a critical communications tool," says Adam Bird, managing director,
Esendex. "Also, being able to prove a message has been received and
understood is increasingly important. Voice SMS builds on our expertise
transporting text messages and provides yet another avenue for
communications with staff, carers, patients or customers."
