Surveillance society set to increase: IC opens public debate on
implications
The Information Commissioner, Richard Thomas, launched a public
debate last month on the implications of living in a surveillance
society. The public discussion document is based on a report, A
surveillance society, commissioned by the Information Commissioner’s
Office for the 28th International Data Protection and Privacy
Commissioners’ Conference in London in early November.
The report, which looks at surveillance in 2006 and projects forward
10 years to 2016, shows that the management of modern-day society is
increasingly dependent on surveillance techniques and data sharing. It
states that such surveillance is developing in an uncontrolled way and
has the potential to change the way in which citizens relate to each
other and to the state.
