The Government has published an 11-page Information sharing vision
statement to establish the principle of data sharing between all
public-sector bodies. If this vision becomes reality, the NHS should,
for example, be able to share details of all patients with other public
authorities without the need for patient consent whenever it is in “the
public interest” to do so.
This vision augments the decision taken by the Government in April
when it announced a strategy for a central register of citizens’ names,
addresses and other basic contact details, to be used by all
public-sector authorities (see bjhc&im June, p2 or
a summary online).
