Following publication of two reports concluding that countries should
adopt open-source systems (OSSs) for use within healthcare, the United
Nations has called on all member states to use them in their publicly
funded healthcare services.
In a speech in Barcelona, Louis Dominique Ouedraogo, the UN official
with responsibility for healthcare computing, used the reports to argue
that all countries, rich and poor, would be better off adopting OSSs for
medical and administrative records. He pointed to experiences in Spain,
South America, South Africa, Malaysia and the state of Massachusetts in
the USA.
