ID-card system lacks transparency and clarity of purpose, say MPs

 
The House of Commons Science and Technology Committee has heavily criticised the Government for the “inconsistencies and a lack of transparency” in its plans to develop its identity-card system. In particular, the Committee refers to a lack of clarity in the way the National Identity Register (NIR), the database associated with the ID card, will become interoperable with systems used by the NHS and by other public bodies (See also bjhc&im June 2006, p2).

The Committee’s report, Identity card technologies: scientific advice, risk and evidence, was published last month.
