| Doctors could soon
be using smell to detect the early warning signs of a number of
different diseases — including cancer, organ failure and bacterial
infections — as a result of an EU research programme. Scientists in
Spain, France and Italy have developed a bioelectronic nose that can
detect thousands of different smells at levels that are imperceptible to
humans. They are now developing software that can translate data from
the electronic nose into diagnostic information for clinicians.
