Integration of healthcare and socialcare records is ‘pie in the sky’

 
England’s National Programme for IT has absolutely no prospect of integrating healthcare and socialcare records by its original target date of 2010, according to community care specialists at the HC2006 conference in March.

Despite being set out as one of the goals of the NPfIT in 2002, the concept has been steadily neglected. The result is that little progress has been made, according to Ian Herbert, a respected data modeller, formerly with the NHS Information Authority and now a primary care consultant.

“Putting healthcare and socialcare records together by 2010 is simply fairyland”, Herbert told delegates. “We just don’t know how to do it”.
