Use of computer-based systems in communication practices involving
carotid ultrasound
Ophthalmic surgeons Muhammad Usman Saeed, Bernard Chang,

data standards in investigation requesting and reporting in their field.
ABSTRACT
We describe a retrospective review of carotid duplex requesting and
reporting in an English district general hospital using computer-based
forms.
Our results are in line with previously published reports regarding
incidence of carotid stenosis and ophthalmic complaints.
Our study shows a variable quality of requesting and reporting of
investigations. Insufficient clinical data was offered in at least 27% of
instances. According to the criteria we used, 70% of the reports were judged
to be satisfactory and 30% unsatisfactory. Amongst these 30% unsatisfactory
reports, 17.7% of reports required clarification. Amongst these 3.2% were
considered misleading.
This data highlights variable reporting by different individuals, even
within a single ultrasound department. A fixed format of requesting and
reporting may help to minimise variation in information quality.
