Delivering IT for a modern, efficient NHS in England
Richard Granger, Chief Executive of NHS Connecting for Health and
Director General of NHS IT for England, summarises progress to date on the
seven main programmes of work within the country’s National Programme for IT
in the NHS. ABSTRACT The
10-year National Programme for IT in the NHS in England is being delivered
by NHS Connecting for Health, an agency of the Department of Health. Now in
its third year of implementation, the Programme, which is helping to
transform England’s NHS by providing all its organisations with an
integrated IT infrastructure and systems, has delivered 1,168 new systems
and services by mid-May.
Progress in each of its present areas of main focus is described. These
are: putting in place the foundations and systems to support the national
Care Records Service; the rollout of the Electronic Prescription Service;
the rollout of the Choose and Book service; the rollout of digital picture
archiving and communications systems; provision of support systems for GPs;
the rollout of NHS mail, the national email and directory service; and
connections to N3, the new national broadband network for the NHS. Br J
