Working to make EHR a standard of care in Canada

An overview of Canada’s approach to, and progress in, enabling clinicians to have access to their patients’ records and decision support anywhere and at any time these are needed, from Richard Alvarez, President and CEO of Canada Health Infoway Inc.

ABSTRACT

Strong motivation and political will, along with an appreciation for the value of information technology, have created a solid foundation for an interoperable electronic healthcare record (EHR) right across Canada. The mission of Canada Health Infoway is to foster and accelerate the development and adoption of electronic health-information systems with compatible standards and communications technologies on a pan-Canadian basis. Collaboration and co-ordination are at the heart of its implementation strategy. Current areas of activity are outlined.
