The open-source magnet and England’s NPfIT
Despite the large investment in proprietary core systems, England’s
National Programme may end up with an open-source infrastructure after all,
says William Payne.
ABSTRACT
Although the benefits associated with open-source software (OSS) have
made it an attractive alternative to proprietary software for
enterprise-wide developments in healthcare communications technology, its
use has not yet been attempted nationally in England.
But, faced with increasing complexity and development costs in the third
year of the country’s implementation of its National Programme for IT in the
NHS, the contracted solutions providers are beginning to consider placing
OSS within their core technologies.
