Meeting new national requirements with existing local information
systems: integration, integration, integration
Jeff Jacklin reports on how the Milton Keynes healthcare community
is reconciling its continuing need for information handled in its existing
local systems with the introduction of new national-system platforms,
payment by results and foundation-trust status.
ABSTRACT
This is a case study of one healthcare community’s approach to preserving
access to existing systems whilst implementing an early release of the
system for England’s Care Records Service (CRS).
It demonstrates the indispensability of historical data and the need to
make it available within the new regime of national computer systems.
Only by having a well-thought-out integration strategy can trusts expect
the co-operation of clinicians while building an information base that
continues to support their needs, meets the requirements of CRS deployments
and lays the groundwork for handling information relating to payment by
results and NHS foundation-trust status.
