Development of the hospital information intranet-system DOCA+

From Novosibirsk, in southern Siberia, Dr Efim I Shulman and Dr Gennadij Z Rot explain how an HIS has been made more clinician friendly.

ABSTRACT

A second-generation hospital information system, DOCA+, developed by Fund Medsanchast-168, based in Novosibirsk, Russia, has been designed with clinician usability and operational flexibility as its primary goals. The authors describe how web technologies and open-source software have been used to enable customisation of the system and to make electronic prescribing, decision-support and data capture very much easier for doctors.

HIS DOCA+ is currently used fully by clinicians in 10 Russian hospitals, and its deployment has resulted in measurable improvements in the quality of healthcare services, better patient safety and reductions in operational costs.
