Telemedicine in Russia

Professor Boris A Kobrinskiy, Chairman of the Medical Centre for New Information Technology at Moscow’s Research Institute for Paediatrics and Children’s Surgery, describes how Russia is using telemedical communications.

ABSTRACT

During the last decade telemedicine became a reality in Russian healthcare practice. Nationwide projects are being implemented and regional telemedical networks are actively being formed. Specialised areas of telemedicine (teledermatology, teleradiology, teleanaesthesiology, etc) have evolved. Experience has been gained from disaster telemedicine and from remote health monitoring of the Russian expeditions to Antarctica. The place of videoconferences in the entire system of teleconsultation has been identified, and the use of information technologies in the processes of teleconsultations is increasing. Thousands of teleconsultations a year are now conducted at both federal and regional levels.
