Delivering England’s electronic Prescriptions Service

In this introduction to the shaping and rollout of the National Prescriptions Service, Tim Donohoe outlines its development and current progress towards full implementation.

ABSTRACT

The present phase in the development of the electronic transmission of prescriptions (ETP) in England began soon after the initiation of the National Programme for IT in the NHS in late 2002. It builds on work done in trials during 2001–03 by three piloting consortia, and an implementation plan has now been determined.

During the transition to ETP, there will be an admixture of prescribers and dispensers who are/are not able to operate the service, owing to a variety of factors. It is expected that the implementation of the electronic Prescriptions Service will be implemented in phases; the first sites to adopt initial-implementation went live earlier this year.
