Creation of a mouth-cancer website and online support group
Less than five years ago many doctors baulked at the idea of patients
using the Internet to learn about their diseases and how best to manage
them, but the tide is turning. Medical specialists have started to produce
high-quality information of value not only to patients but also to their
familial and professional carers. Dr Vinod Joshi, a consultant in
restorative dentistry, is one of those pioneers, and in this article tells
us how he did it and explains the role of this 21st century professional
support service.
ABSTRACT
The Mouth Cancer Foundation Website and Online Support Group at
www.mouthcancerfoundation.org
was developed to improve patients’ access to information about these and
other head-and-neck cancers; to improve healthcare professionals’ access to
information to facilitate oral care for patients; and to increase awareness
of mouth cancers amongst the public. Its four-year development and successes
to date are described.
