Creation of a gold-standard theatre-management system for Musgrave Park
Hospital
Stephen Beattie gives an overview of this collaboratively
developed system, which led one commentator to note: “Everyone gets more
information than they put in.”
ABSTRACT
As one of Europe’s largest and leading elective orthopaedic centres, it
is important that Musgrave Park Hospital manages its theatres efficiently
and effectively. Over 6,500 patients are treated there each year.
The objectives of the project were to create an integrated electronic
theatre-management system with functionality to enable: surgical-site
infection surveillance; tracking and traceability of surgical equipment;
maintenance and control of implant stock; bone-grafting and bone-harvesting
data collection; direct input to the Northern Ireland Regional Joint
Register; and full theatre scheduling and auditing to include all resources.
The IT department collaborated closely with key clinical staff to give
them access to a wide range of theatre information. The Belfast Orthopaedic
Information System (BOIS) now allows staff to monitor exactly what is
happening with a patient and with theatre capacity at any stage of activity.
