Patients and relatives tell us what they need to know through their narratives: an exploratory qualitative study

Patient Informatics Specialist Sheila Wilson describes a method for establishing an evidence base for providing information for patients.

ABSTRACT

This project followed a large systematic literature review. It used a discovery interview approach to explore the information given to, and wanted by, Wirral patients with colorectal cancer and their relatives, at each stage of their care experience. Findings were examined stage by stage for patients and for relatives separately.

Comparison was made between the two groups and with the national and international literature. Findings were charted to provide a summary of information given; information wanted; the most important information; and additional information sought by the patients and their relatives.

The findings of this exploratory study will help us to improve the match between our services (electronic patient information) and the needs of those who depend on them. Results can be applied in any medium (paper, video, audio and verbal language).
