Beyond systems design: dimensions of end-user involvement in local
electronic patient-record developments
Andrea Jones offers some suggestions for making it possible for
end-users to own the new patient-record systems being introduced in
England’s National Programme for IT in the NHS.
ABSTRACT
This article raises questions about how NHS trusts in England can engage
clinicians and other staff in EPR developments. It recognises that the
National Programme for IT in the NHS limits the scope for traditional forms
of user involvement in systems design but draws on models of user
involvement from urban planning and healthcare decision-making to outline
some other dimensions of involvement of clinicians and other staff that
could help frame local implementation processes.
