The NPfIT in London: a case study
Wishing to take the opportunity offered by England’s National Programme
for IT to move its core information systems to the national standard, the
Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust’s hopes were dashed when it found this
would take them backwards rather than forwards. Dr Jo Milan,
the Trust’s Director of ICT, explains why.
ABSTRACT
The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (RMH) is a specialist cancer
hospital that has an advanced hospital information and electronic
patient-record system that incorporates a sophisticated datawarehouse.
The combined system has been developed almost entirely inhouse and
although such DIY has proved to be both cost effective and delivers high
levels of user satisfaction it presents major challenges for the future.
To surmount these challenges the Trust sought to be an early adopter of
the London CCA/IDX solution but this has proved to be impractical due to a
mismatch between the policies of the NPfIT in London and the needs of the
RMH. Consequently, deployment has been deferred until later in the
Programme.
