ABSTRACT
Good health and equal access to healthcare services for everyone are the
goals of the Swedish healthcare system. A fundamental principle is that the
provision and financing of healthcare services for the entire population is
a public-sector responsibility. It rests primarily with 21 county councils.
This article describes how healthcare services are organised, managed,
financed and delivered, and includes mention of recent national initiatives
to provide better care services for its citizens.
