Information-system development priorities for a paediatric intensive care unit

Four medical students — Imran Hamid, Preetesh Modi, Tasneem Pirani and Iman Velji — and Dr Benita Cox, from Imperial College, London, report the results of their research.

ABSTRACT

This paper describes the results of research undertaken in mid 2003 to identify information-system development priorities for a paediatric intensive care unit in a London hospital trust.

The researchers found that software applications that facilitate the prescribing of drugs for infants and children and provide access to patients’ records were considered a priority for the unit.

Electronic recording of vital-signs monitoring was also rated as desirable. In addition, a strong need was found for means to improve the usefulness of the electronic system for ordering laboratory tests and receiving results.
