England’s National Programme for IT in the NHS: benefits, risks and
challenges
Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in implementing the NHS
Care Records Service are looked at by Oxfordshire Health Informatics
Service Director John Skinner.
abstract
Know-how gained from the many successful and failed implementations of
complex new computer-based work systems emphasises that the difference
between triumph and disgrace is rarely in the underlying software. It is
usually attributable to the quality and quantity of resources available,
the effort of managers devoted to making the systems work and clear
identification of the expected benefits.
Using the eight most common causes of project failure as a starting
point, the author identifies some of the main local-management challenges
and requirements for making England’s NHS Care Records Service a reality.
