Caldicott guardians — driving the confidentiality agenda

Dr Janine Brooks is the NHS Information Authority’s Caldicott Guardian. Here, she explains the role and why the new UK Council of Caldicott Guardians is a major step forward in protecting patients’ confidentiality.

In an age where we are moving towards greater electronic sharing of information between NHS and socialcare organisations, Caldicott guardians have an increasingly vital role to play in ensuring that patients’ personal medical information is properly safeguarded.

An insight is given into the background and responsibilities of Caldicott guardians in the NHS. This feature also describes how the NHS Information Authority is enabling and supporting the work of Caldicott guardians through the newly formed Council of Caldicott Guardians.
