Evolution of New Zealand’s health knowledge management system
Dr Martin Orr describes his country’s approach to networking its
medical services.
abstract
New Zealand has one of the most electronically assisted healthcare
sectors in the world. Rather than being technology driven there has been a
focus on the traditional knowledge-management approach of identifying key
current and strategic needs, examining the processes that may best meet
those needs, then considering how technology could help. There has been an
incremental evolution rather than a ‘big bang’ revolution. By
progressively developing capacity throughout the sector, this may lead to
quicker more sustainable fundamental positive change in the end.
