abstract

IT solutions within the NHS are often unique as a result of having to satisfy the specialised working practices of the Service, but it is widely accepted that developing bespoke IT solutions can be extremely expensive. An alternative strategy is the adaptation of commercial software packages to suit these specialised needs.

The WallCHART package, produced by Wallchart International Limited, has been successfully adapted to satisfy the requirements of the Welsh Blood Service’s apheresis clinic. In addition to providing appointment-booking facilities it has been enhanced to collect complex data that is generated by the cell-separator machines during the donation procedure. Recognising the need throughout the NHS for a cohesive solution, an interface developed inhouse ensures the integration of the package with the legacy blood-management system.

Thus a sophisticated, modern and cost-effective solution has been provided which satisfies user requirements and provides a basis for ongoing development.
