abstract

In the last 10 years there have been significant advances in technological methods for blind people to access information. In many other areas, such as inexpensive devices for daily living, progress has been very slow. New technology, such as the global positioning system, offers exciting possibilities if a device can be produced that is both user friendly and inexpensive. In the foreseeable future, electronic systems for enhancing and substituting for vision look very promising. An area beginning to attract interest is the design of terminals for the general public so that disabled people are not unnecessarily excluded from using these systems.
