The BCS’s Disability Specialist Group: a force on the move

For many years, the Disability Specialist Group of the British Computer Society has been a leading activist in promoting a culture of enablement for disabled people. Its one-time chairman, now BCS Advisor on Disability Issues, Dr Geoffrey Busby describes the Group’s main current activities.

abstract

This article describes the activities of the British Computer Society’s Disability Specialist Group and the Society itself. It has been a voice in bringing about legislation so that people with disabilities can become better-integrated members of our society, which wishes to be inclusive. ICTs alone will not be able to facilitate such a major change and affect the general perception held by the vast majority of people who believe they are immune from disability. Miniaturisation in communications tools is threatening to be a force for exclusion rather than inclusion, and the medical profession must become much more aware of the social aspects that affect their patients with disabilities.
