Healthcare informatics skills — the key to NHS modernisation

Martin Sotheran, Head of the NHS Information Authority’s National Health Informatics Development division, gives an update on its progress in the development of a curriculum for healthcare-informatics professionals and in establishing a formal, basic level of competence in healthcare-informatics skills for NHS professionals.

The NHS Information Authority and its predecessor organisations have championed national work programmes providing a strategic lead and support to increase the skills and knowledge of healthcare informatics and information management and technology throughout the NHS. The different but co-ordinated strands of work being undertaken by the Information Authority in partnership with major NHS healthcare informatics stakeholders to support the development of NHS IM&T capability and capacity are described.
