abstract
In September 2002, the UK Council for Health Informatics Professions
(UKCHIP) was formed by a group of people from several relevant
professional associations concerned to improve the status of healthcare
informaticians. It is a regulatory body that will, in October this year,
start registering healthcare informaticians who meet appropriate
standards of qualification, experience and behaviour.
A main aim of the Council is to formalise the professional status of
healthcare informaticians in the UK. It will also determine and uphold
standards to ensure that patients’ safety is not jeopardised by the
actions of its members.
UKCHIP is supported by the Departments of Health of all the four
countries of the United Kingdom, and established professional
associations such as the British Computer Society, ASSIST, UKIHI, IHM
and others.
The Council’s founding, its terms of reference and an overview of its
development to date are described.
