Preparing for healthcare and socialcare integration: some current barriers to ICT-based sharing of information

The execution of national strategies by IM&T-implementation teams at local levels are being hampered by insufficient information and the slow resolution of contradictions resulting from revised legislation and NHS policies. Philip Firth explains.

Several information-management and communications strategies for England in the last five years emphasise the importance of seamless service delivery in healthcare and socialcare. Until adequate funding has been identified, and key issues such as data protection and patient consent have been tackled, healthcare and socialcare organisations will be ill prepared to take on this complex task.
